Start, Shutdown, Shutoff!

What

Tell the computer you don't want to use it any more.

When

You're done working for the day.  It's time to go home.  Don't touch the power switch.  Tell the computer you want to shut it down.

How

I know it doesn't make sense to stop things by clicking on START, but that's where everything begins.

  1. Click the Start button.
  2. Click Shut Down
  3. A box will pop up asking you to verify that you really want to stop everything and shut off the computer.  It also gives you several choices.  Only one of those choices is to actually shut down the computer.  The other choices give you various options for restarting the computer in different ways.  If you are really ready to shut down the computer, make sure the "Shut down the computer" choice is selected.
  4. Click Yes.
  5. Wait.  Eventually, one of two things will happen:   either your computer will turn itself off, or you will get a screen telling you that it is OK to turn of the power.  Once you see this screen, press the power switch on your computer to turn it off.

Your computer will now be in its initial state of rest, eagerly awaiting your return the next day.

Tip:  If for some reason (like a power failure) you were not able to shut down your computer properly, the next time you turn it on you will get a message telling you how smart your computer is.  It will know that your computer was not properly shut down.  It will try to blame you, and chastise you, and warn you not to do it again.  Let it do what it thinks it has to do.  This could be as simple as running an automatic Scandisk, or as complicated as putting you into the dreaded Safe Mode.  If you see that you are in safe mode, when the computer finishes starting up, tell it to shut down again.  But this time, select the box that tells it to Restart the computer.  It should come back up normally.  Grab a piece of paper and a large marker.  Write the words "Up Yours" in bold letters on the paper.   Hold the paper up to the computer so that it can read it clearly.  Feel justified.  Smile.  Quickly shred the paper.
